该剧讲诉了典型的重庆女孩——林爽，24岁，毕业于美院工艺美术系。外貌亮丽撩人，天性无拘无束，热情开朗，泼辣干练，幽默爱笑。一系列打工经历成长。
大陆改革开放初期，优先发展的广东一带是内陆许多省市年轻人眼中的天堂，北方某省名叫赵家坳的小山村就有赵小云（陈小艺）、志强等六名青年男女怀着梦想来到广东，他们希望通过打工改变自己的命运。其时纺织、玩具制造等产业是广东的发展支柱，心细手快的打工妹远比笨手拙脚的打工仔吃香，赵小云等几个姑娘很快进入某厂成为“外来妹”，志强等几个男孩则被拒之门外。 外面的世界很精彩，外面的世界很无奈。漫漫打工路令几个情如姐妹的姑娘做出不同的人生抉择：有的经不起金钱考验，走上不归路；有的与当地人结婚，留在了广东；有的感慨金窝银窝好不过自己的狗窝，又回赵家坳……其中故事最为精彩的，当属赵小云：事业上经过波折有很大成就令人感叹，她与香港老板（汤镇宗）的情感纠葛亦扣人心弦。
该剧讲述了“程浩”和“陆鸿渐”双男主在平行空间互换身份，与迷妹林小小所发生的故事。
故事是在曹院长倾其所有创建的“美好时光”养老院展开的，几位老人都因为各种原因在自己的生活境遇中各有不同的烦恼与矛盾，但不约而同地都选择了到养老院寻找自己理想的生活。在他们身上发生了一连串啼笑皆非的幽默故事之后，他们都恢复到了以前幸福美满的生活中。
James Purefoy stars as William Travers, a criminal barrister who is recovering from a traumatic series of events that have shaken his belief in the legal system.
